Introduction

Kasin is one of the main characters of Trump. He is Ran's childhood friend and Hiasen's guardian.

Innate Mana

Kasin's Innate Mana is "Air" - an Arche type Mana.

Mana Rate: The Absoluteness of Air can't be estimated which makes him a High-Risk Group Mana Possessor.[5]

Ran's full power does not work on Kasin.[6] Certa assumes Kasin's Air could actually kill him.[7]

Kasin is said to be an elite in using Air.[8]

Background

As a High-Risk Group Mana Possessor Kasin grew up isolated from society, together with Ran, Senika and Nori. As a child he was often involved in fights with Ran, but eventually they got along. After graduating from school, Kasin became a member of the Honorable Trump, holding a very high position, but he resigned after getting custody of Hiasen.

Personality

Kasin always wears a serene expression and is able to make others feel at ease. Though he seems to act like an idiot, as far as Hiasen is concerned.[9] He considers himself too much of an adult to handle kids.[10] Kasin always follows his own plans and is terrifyingly cold minded.[11] According to Ran he is a very rational and law-abiding man.[12] However, that is actually not true, Kasin acts against the law on several occasions.[13] It was also revealed that he was known to like drinking before but after rejoining the Trump of Honor, his addiction worsened.[14] His work ethics are horrible in general. His boss considered him an underachiever to the point that he'd deem it necessary to punish Kasin for it.[10] And Kasin himself states he hates jobs that make him think a lot.[15]

Relationships

Hiasen
Kasin has been taking care of Hiasen since the day Ran left his son. He is a bit overprotective of Hiasen[9] and some people wonder, if Kasin isn't overdoing it. They think that what Kasin does, does not necessarily match what is best for Hiasen.[16] For example, Kasin cares for Hiasen so much that he told him to wipe out his memories of his father, thinking it would be the best for the boy, but eventually adding to his suffering. He regularly withholds information about Ran from Hiasen, thinking it is in the kid's interest.[17][9] While he wants to be a father figure for Hiasen[9], he doesn't feel comfortable to be called "father" by the boy.[18]
Kasin's love for Hiasen exceeds that of his care for his childhood friend Ran as was shown when he decided to sell out Ran's latest picture to Ten in order to erase all evidence pertaining to Hiasen's existence.
Ran
Ran and Kasin often fought when they were kids. Ran used to pick fights with Kasin to force him to use his Air Mana, and thus, avoid Senika's health deteriorating even more.[19] One of their fights almost lead to Kasin's death and caused a severe injury to Ran. Once they were able to go to school, the two of them somehow settled their differences and were able to become friends. Although he used to defend Ran's actions at the beginning of the story,[20] Kasin could no longer tolerate them at the end of Season 1 and decided that it would be best for Hiasen to forget his memories about him. Regardless of their fight and the problems they have, they both trust each other. Ran knew Kasin would never betray him without a good reason[21] (by making a contract with Ten) and it was shown that Kasin knew Ran wasn't a criminal as Ran would never do something Senika hates (hurting others).[11] Kasin also tries to help Ran when he can (season 3).
Jewby
Jewby's relationship with Ran is better than with Kasin. He would rather share with Ran, if he would find crucial information on Senika's murder, than with Kasin.[22]

Season 1

Melly's Diary[]

Flashback to a time 3 years prior to Season 1:
Ran asked Kasin to babysit Hiasen for a few months, so he can learn how to revive Senika now that he had found the person who came back from the dead. Kasin understood that Ran wanted his wife back, but admonished Ran to not sacrifice his child for his dead wife.[9]

Present time:
Roaming around the city Kasin finds new wanted posters of Ran. He wonders what crime his childhood friend committed that would justify such a high bounty. He visits his other fiend, Nori, to talk about Hiasen's nagging to attend school. It's his wish for Melly#Melly Day, a holiday Kasin has not heard of. Kasin can't fulfill this wish because Ran didn't register Hiasen's birth to protect the child from becoming a subject of interest for the police. Aside from that, he hasn't even told Hiasen that his father is a fugitive.[17]

Still uncertain what to do with Hiasen, Kasin stops by Eldenin's shop to ask for advice. He thinks, HIasen has too much too handle for his age and is considering to get him a friend, but Eldenin disagrees and thinks Kasin is spoiling the boy to much. She tells him The Story of Melly & the Boy to elaborate what she means.[20]After narrating the tragic fairy tale, Eldenin explains that Melly asked for too much and couldn't save neither the boy nor herself in the end. She couldn't revive the boy with her Desire because the dead can't come back.[23] Kasin is surprised to hear that the Creator is said to revive Melly on every February 29th, as they were the one to order Melly's execution in the first place. If the Creator had cared about the two, they would have revived the boy, more so they would have educated Melly about her powers instead of locking her up.[24]

Kasin returns home to find Melly's ghost while Hiasen is gone.[25] After hearing what happened, Kasin wants to go after Hiasen, explaining that Ran didn't stay away because he wanted to, but because his presence poses a threat to Hiasen. Melly understand that Kasin has Hiasen's safety on his mind, yet, she questions if it's really in Hiasen's interest to keep him isolated and out of touch with his father. He may feel safer at Ran's side even if the place Ran is at is like hell.[16]
When Hiasen hasn't returned by the evening, Kasin becomes extremely worried and regrets having taken in Ran's child. Melly has to reassure him that everything will be fine. Eventually, Ran brings back Hiasen who's unconscious. Kasin scolds him for abandoning his son, but Ran is at a point where he wants to cut all ties with Hiasen. If that's the case, Kasin doesn't want him to ever show up again. He'll be Hiasen's father in Ran's stead from now on and make him happy. Ran leaves. Kasin doesn't think he was too cruel to Ran even though he knows that Ran brought back Hiasen because it's too dangerous for the kid to stay with his father. Despite what he said to Ran, Kasin tells Hiasen, Ran will be back soon, when the boy wakes up. Hiasen is relieved. He thought Ran would abandon him forever for acting selfishly. He asks Kasin to never leave him as he'd be completely alone without Kasin.[9] After what happened, Hiasen won't look for his father anymore until Ran comes for him. He feels comfortable with Kasin.[4]

Melly disappears, entrusting Kasin with her diary. Looking back at the events of the day, Kasin concludes Certa might be the person who came back from the dead and for whom Ran is looking for, while at first he thought it was Melly.[4]

Investigating on the incident that took place this day in the bar "Nothing Much", Ten and Sena assume Ran had an accomplice. They think it was probably Kasin.[4]

The 73rd Box[]

Kasin decides to let Hiasen attend school because he isn't sure, if Ran was serious about cutting ties and he feels responsible to be a good father in lieu of Ran. Kasin notices that Hiasen has a Pita Pata. When asked, Hiasen assumes Kasin put it there, but Kasin recognizes it as Ran's without informing Hiasen. The two are greeted by Nori and Sena upon arrival at the school.[8] Kasin is aware that he is being watched by Sena[26] and Ten[27] but he's fine with it as long as they stay away from Hiasen.[26]

Hiasen discovers a Memory Box that hasn't been opened for around 200 years and asks Kasin about it, but his uncle wants him to stay away from the box.[28] Kasin assumes, it's a box he made together with Ran and Nori, but isn't sure, so seeks Nori to confirm.[29] When Kasin mentions that Hiasen wants to open their Memory Box, Nori doesn't see an issue as there's only a story about Senika in there, but for Kasin that is the problem: nobody ever mentioned Senika to Hiasen, so the boy is not aware of his mom. Kasin is afraid that finding out who she is and that she is dead would distress Hiasen too much when he already has enough on his plate, dealing with his father's absence.
Unknown to Kasin, though, Hiasen is given partial access to the memories in the box by Ran's Pita Pata:[30]

205 years prior to Season 1 Ran, Nori and Kasin set up the Memory Box. Ran wanted to decide on the "key" and Kasin suggested that in exchange he and Nori would choose the contents of the box[30] to ensure that Ran didn't put memories of only him and Senika in it as he liked her so much that the other boys were only "irritants" to him.[31]

Finding out that there was a girl at his father's side makes Hiasen all the more curious about the box and he continues thinking about ways open it. His attempts to get more information out of the box lead to Ten uncovering his family ties to Ran.[32] Kasin finds out about the incident and asks Nori to take care of Hiasen while he deals with Ten.[32] He intends to sell out Ran. Nori is shocked and asks if it wouldn't be better to just kill Ten and go into hiding again, because reporting Ran is "not cool". But Kasin explains that Ran was involved in "something strange" and that's why he left Hiasen behind. Kasin can't shut the boy away again and it's better to side with the police than becoming a murderer. Kasin admits that this was his plan right from when he decided to let Hiasen attend school.[33]

Kasin offers Ten a deal to provide information on Ran if Ten protects Hiasen's identity from being leaked, and all of them from persecution by Yeohadan.[33]

Hiasen apologizes to Kasin for being careless about his identity and for not listening when told to not open the box. He discloses that he knows there are memories about Ran's girlfriend in the box and Kasin musters up the courage to finally tell Hiasen about his mother:[34]

206 years prior to Season 1, Ran, Senika and Nori were living in The Stagnant Space under Psychi's care, when one day Kasin joined them.[35] Senika had absolutely no immunity to other people's Mana and might have died any time if left alone. Kasin's Innate Mana permeated all the air around him and had negative effects on Senika's health. Ran was stressed out by her state.[36] He asked Psychi to move Kasin elsewhere but that was not possible. All Psychi could do is developing an immunotherapy for Senika, but it was a time-intense process. Ran didn't want to wait that long and tried to think of a solution himself. He came up with the idea to use Farty to absorb Kasin's Innate Mana.[35] To test the effectivity of the method, he had to make Kasin use his Mana, so he started picking fights with him without telling him what he was up to.[37] Based on Psychi's advice, Ran also never told Kasin about Senika, who was isolated from the others for the time being.[36][19] One day, Kasin heard a sound and followed it. He ended up in Senika's room, where one of the medical machines was beeping to signal a medical issue. He was surprised and confused to see a girl he didn't know about and asked Ran who she was when Ran entered the room. But Ran snapped at him for approaching Senika and affecting her health even more.[38] The two got into a serious fight[39] that ended with severe injuries for both of them.[36] Psychi finally explained to Kasin why Ran was acting so strange. In the meantime, Senika scolded Ran for fighting a friend because of her and didn't want to see Ran until he had apologized to Kasin, which he promised to do. He just couldn't stand the idea to lose her because she was the only family he had left after the other 11 children had died. Psychi barged into their conversation to scold Ran for the fight and to tell them that decision was made to execute Kasin and that he regreted not having told Kasin about Senika earlier. Ran was a nervous wreck after hearing this. He regreted thinking that anyone who hurt Senika should disappear. Ran was also of the opinion that Psychi should at least tell Kasin that he was about to die.[19]
The Captain came to pick up Kasin. Before leaving, Kasin told Ran that he would've cooperated in testing the method with Farty if he had known what was happening. He also asked Ran to wish Senika all the best from him. With Kasin showing remorse about the incident, Ran felt even worse about the situation, begged the Captain to not execute Kasin and said that he should be punished instead. His plea was successful and aside from the death sentence being dropped, decision was made to not isolate the kids any longer and give them social rights. They were allowed to attend an ordinary school,[40] but Senika had to stay behind in the Mana Association because she was still too weak.[31] At school, Ran, Kasin and Nori made the Memory Box to keep the memories of Senika, these events and as a promise to not fight again.[40] Unknown to Kasin and Nori, Ran had put a note to Kasin in the box before sealing it. It says "Thank you" and that "Even if one betrays another, it should be valid until someone takes it out on purpose."[40][2]

Kasin explains to Hiasen that they've been keeping this a secret from him because no one of them was brave enough to tell him about Senika. Hiasen asks, if it's because she's dead, and Kasin is surprised he already knew. Hiasen tells him, he's not stupid and had thought on the reason why he was raised by a single-father. Kasin expected him to be shocked, but Hiasen is only worried that Kasin would fight with the police over finding out his identity and thus becoming a criminal like his father.[40] Hiasen becomes very angry with Kasin when his uncle tells him he sold out Ran to Ten. It was unnecessary because nobody would have punished Hiasen for his dad's crimes. Kasin thinks to himself that the most realistic ending would be that Ran admits his crimes, pays for them and comes back to Hiasen. If that was not possible, both of them should sacrifice themselves for Hiasen.[41]

Season 2

Moxnox: February 29th[]

Together with Hiasen Kasin meets Melly again. Hiasen didn't make any progress on finding Certa and Kasin wonders, if there's a reason why his name isn't mentioned anywhere, not even in Melly's Book. He thinks, the name could even be a trap, so Melly should focus on something other than Certa himself. He suggests looking for the place that can't be reached by the sun instead. Kasin also asks Melly to take back her Diary that she borrowed to Hiasen, so it doesn't mess with his relationship to Ran again.[42]

Kasin also tells Nori, that he was trying to convince Hiasen to work for him, but to no avail.

The leader of Trump of Honor wants to see Kasin urgently, so he heads over, assuming it's about him living with Hiasen for 7 years without having a permission.[43]

Distorted Memory[]

Kasin rejoins Trump of Honor and starts drinking every day, together with Nori.[44] Because he's constantly hungover, Hiasen has trouble reaching him, when he needs him for mental support.[45]

La Lune[]

Kasin meets up with Psychi and they talk about Ran. Psychi brings up the possibility that Ran is being wrongly accused of crimes he didn't do, but to his surprise, Kasin knew that all along. He says, Senika taught Ran for more than 200 years to not hurt or cause trouble to others and Ran wouldn't have done something that Senika hated.[11]

Later in the HQ of Trump of Honor Kasin is visited by Ten.[46] he came to ask him, if he realized before Ran that Senika was murdered and learns that Kasin did.[47] In a conversation between Kasin and Nori it is revealed that Kasin was with Senika when she died. She collapsed into his arms, asking him to not call Ran, because she was afraid, Ran would be killed.[14]

Towards the end of the La Lune arc, Kasin stops by Yeohadan, officially, to pay a visit to his son,[48] but in fact, to tease Ran[18] and to see how he is coping with Hiasen being around, because Ran used to have no idea how to act around him.[11] But Ran was probably suspecting something like that and went into hiding, so that Kasin had a short conversation with Hiasen instead. After listening to Hiasen's issues with the Yeohadan Captain, without knowing who Hiasen was talking about, Kasin gives Hiasen an advice how to resolve the problem. Hiasen promptly heads over to implement the solution[18] and comes back later to tell Kasin that it helped him feel better.[49]

Season 3

That Miracle of Synodic Month[]

Ten consults Kasin about Ran's obsession with the case of the 13 missing children and is told that Ran had some side effects from an experiment in his childhood, but Kasin doesn't know the details, he only heard about it from Nori. This information makes Ten support Ran in solving the case.[50]

Ran is engaged in a fight with Hellfire while trying to free the children and stabbed to the chest which leaves him in a critical state. Since he's a wanted person, Ten can't bring him to a normal hospital and asks Kasin for help, but Kasin doesn't take him serious and suggests to hand Ran out to Yeohadan and have a nice life with the bounty. Ten makes clear, he's serious. Kasin can't help directly because he's under surveillance for adopting Hiasen, though he advises ten to bring Ran to the bar "Nothing Much" which used to be his hideout. A woman named Jay would wait there.[51]

Jay helps but can only do a quick fix as she's not a specialist and so Ten seeks Kasin's assistance again. He demands from Kasin to end their game of "7" to treat Ran in a hospital without Ten dying for breaking the "Rules". Kasin refuses, accusing Ten of wanting to sell of Ran to Yeohadan, but Ten negates, he can't do that after learning all those things about Ran. Kasin blames the whole problem on Ran's obsession with Senika. To Ran it would be more realistic to revive her than the fact that she is dead. Kasin thinks to himself that Psychi would care more about Ran than anyone else and that he wanted to stop him because he knows Ran would die if he kept trying to find out the truth. But Psychi made the mistake to try to stop Ran with force which is how they ended where they are. Kasin calls on Ten to let Ran leave Ten and the investigation of the truth, if he wants to save Ran. Ten can't since he knows someone expected Senika's death and was trying to save her which got his team involved. Rather than talking him out of it, Ten is of the opinion, Kasin should help find the person with a tattoo of "6". Kasin didn't know, Ten's team was killed by someone with a "6". Ten leaves and Kasin realizes something worrisome: Senika, Ran and Melly are all Syniez and thinks the cases are related. He immediately calls Hiasen to ensure the kid hadn't told anyone, he was looking for Certa, who also has a "6" on his ankle. To his relief, Hiasen treats his search of Certa as a private case. Kasin decides he needs to get Hiasen out of Yeohadan before Ten and Ran would find out.[52]

When checking in on Ran, Kasin sees that he underestimated Ran's health condition. He calls Jewby using Jay's phone and is surprised, Jewby knows her number because he claimed to not have been talking to Ran for 10 years. Kasin informs Jewby about Ran's state and requests help. He himself will try saving his neck with Hiasen. In Yeohadan he approaches Ten to call off their game under the pretext that Ten is useless. He tells Ten that he plans to lay low, but Hiasen thwarts his plan by announcing, he's transferring back to the Captain's office.[53]

Denial[]

Shocked by the development, Kasin changes his mind on cancelling the game with Ten[54] and thinks letting Hiasen work in Yeohadan might have been a big mistake.[55]

He is also frustrated with Ran's recklessness and unawareness of his caring surroundings. He didn't know Ran had to go through Heath's experiment, but still can't be fond of him as Ran never tried to get through to anyone other than Senika. Because Kasin can't reach Psychi and he heard that Ran regained consciousness,[55] he visits Ran to ask how he is doing and why he beat up Psychi. Ran still feels sick and explains that he couldn't trust Psychi ever since he found out that Psychi is the president of the Mana Association, which is also why he was kept in the dark when Hiasen was born. Ran assumes that Psychi knows something important about Senika's death and if he knows the suspect, it is likely that Psychi's relationship with the suspect goes back before he met Ran.[21]

Based on Ten's and Ran's information on the person behind Senika's death and his own conclusion that the case could be related to Melly's story, Kasin asks Jewby to gather information on a person. 4 years ago, he wanted Jewby to find Certa, but neither the name, birthday, nor the death list from 400 years ago, gave any lead. Now, he wants him to check on the Captain to see if he has any similarities with Certa, because he's the only person who is closer to Psychi than Ran.[21] Kasin is determined to find Certa before Ran and Ten because he's getting the feeling that Certa is not on their side.[22] Soon after, he Jewby informs him that Certa and the Captain have the same birthday.[56] He adds that nobody knows the Captain's real name and that he is using an unknown language. Kasin instructs him to not tell Hiasen about the possibility that the Captain is Certa.[57] Both men are aware that the Captain's Innate Mana is Shadow Nine and wonder how strong it is. Kasin assumes that spirits and light-emitting existences might be the only ones safe.[10]
Thinking about the Captain, Kasin remembers how he took a class with him and Senika 18 years ago. He was wondering why Senika kept going to this class. They saw the Captain during the class and Senika mentioned that he was a cop according to Psychi. Kasin didn't think much into Senika's attendance of that class until she asked him what it means to like someone and implying that she might like someone other than Ran. Kasin was shocked and didn't dare to ask for clarification, he only asked what will become of Ran, if she says something like that.[10]

Later on, he heads over to the Mana Association to see if Psychi is still alive. There he finds the Captain talking to Psychi.[58] He takes the opportunity and invites the Captain to have some drinks with him, luring the Captain in with the information that his son is working in Yeohadan and has the same Innate Mana as the Captain.[15] They meet in the evening and after some small talk, Kasin gets down to business, asking about Melly. He tells, he came to know that it is a non-fictional story and that he's now worried about a Syniez friend of his as it appears that fate is rather merciless to people with that Innate Mana. He wants to know the Captain's opinion on the fact that Kasin's two Dream mage Syniez friends have a child with Dream Nine Innate Mana. The Captain explains that "it may be plausible if the child had been influenced by a Nine at its fetal stage. Or if it was killed by a Nine." He also confirms that he is Certa with the remark, that he is the character from a fairy tale and that Melly's story was not published by he's desire, but written by Psychi.[59]
Unfortunately, Kasin is unable to remember the contents of their conversation because he had too many drinks that evening.[15] Nonetheless, he wants Jewby to find him a good place to hide while not explaining why he wants to disappear and why he made Jewby investigate on the Captain.[60]

Bruise[]

Kasin inquires Psychi on the story of Melly and Certa, that Psychi was trying to hide the existance of other "Syniez" (or at least Heath's experiment from the Captain of Yeohadan). He mentions that Ten and Melly informed him about the tattoo of "6" and if the Captain has such a tattto that he'd be closely related to Senika's death, which would also explain why Hiasen's Innate Mana turned out to be "Nine" although both his parents are Syniez. Confronted with Kasin's crucial knowledge, Psychi wishes that they would just all stop investigating on the case of Senika's death, thinking that the things he has been trying to prevent from happening for so long are gradually unfolding in front of him. He tells Kasin that the Captain was hospitalized during the incident 16 years ago and even if the Captain had killed Senika, there would be nothing Kasin and the others could do about it, they would just die in vain. Psychi advises Kasin to get Hiasen out of Yeohadan, if he really thinks that the Captain was the culprit. Kasin concludes that Ran was right about mistrusting Psychi and leaves.

As a result of the conversation with Psychi, Kasin threatens Ten into helping him kidnapping Hiasen from Yeohadan to go wiping the boy's memory again and go into hiding. Hiasen is already suspicious about Kasin's actions regarding him and tries to avoid him when he hears that Kasin is in Yeohadan. He stays in the Captain's office until the coast is clear. When Hiasen thinks it's safe, he leaves and runs into Ten. Ten uses a magic stone that should enable him to manipulate Hiasen's actions, but it fails. Mr. Penguin stops by Hiasen's office after hearing about the kidnapping incident to see if Hiasen is fine. On that occasaion Hiasen asks him about Kasin's number on his phone. Startled by Hiasen's knowledge, Mr. Penguin explains that they are childhood friends. Mr. Penguin leaves to have a conversation with Ten. They discuss that Kasin might have met the Captain recently, but it wouldn't make sense for him to distrust the Captain so much since he was saved by him when he was a child. Ten mentions that he told Kasin about the tattoo of "6" the two were looking for and wonders if Kasin's behavior could have anything to do with it. Hiasen had followed Mr. Penguin because he forgot something. He overhears the conversation and figures out that the Captain is Melly's Certa.

Trivia

  1. Kasin is famous[4][57] to the point that some consider him "legendary".[8]
  2. He loves drinking and smoking. Kasin: "If I can't drink, I'm going to move to a place where drug[s] are legal."[14] Even though he likes it, he tries to avoid drinking too much, because he is afraid of hangover.[44] In comparison to the Certa, though, he can't hold his liquor.[15]
  3. Kasin doesn't like to be called "father" by his adoptive son, Hiasen.[18]
  4. At least while working for Trump of Honor, Kasin had 3 cell phones. It's how he explained to Hiasen, why the boy could never reach him.[18]
  5. At first Ten didn't understand why Kasin kept company with Ran, but later on he didn't understand why Ran put up with Kasin.[51]
  6. Bahn made Kasin attend a class in the Sacred Assembly Hall 18 years ago, because Kasin was underperforming. If he had refused, he would have had to do volunteer work with children which he didn't want because he thought he can't handle them. He is too much of an adult and hates seeing innocent souls that need protection.[10] Yet, he is actually popular with children.[27]

Quotes

"I know you will do just fine even if I don't say anything, but... you must carry on your life on your own now. Incidents that you didn't ask may put you in trouble. It would be best if you could avoid them, but things may not go your way. So, you must learn how to deal with those things on your own. And if you ever face a problem that cannot be solved, promise me that you'll tell me before anybody else. I may not be able to solve the problem perfectly because I'm not omnipotent... But I will be on your side no matter what, and help you with everything I've got." (to Hiasen)[43]

"Of course, sure. Senika taught him for 200 years not to hurt or cause trouble to others. I know perfectly well that he wouldn't have done what Senika hates the most. But so what? Ran refused my offer to help. He had enough time to explain what was going on, but he avoided and worsened the problem. Well? What can I do?" (to Psychi)[11]

"Well I'm a little bit sad. I came here thinking you'd be really mad at me. But look at you. All you think about is him, and you seem like you don't care about the fact that I didn't pick up your phone. It means he is an important person to you. Tell him what you think." (to Hiasen)[18]
