Introduction

Certa is the Captain of Yeohadan[8] and a member of the Tessera. He is referred to as the absolute god of death and is in charge of imposing the capital punishment of Rozerokarta, Annihilation. His jurisdiction is "wherever Yeohadan's shadows reach."[9] Certa is also the boy Melly is looking for.

Innate Mana

Certa is a Shadow Nine, meaning he can invite/bring people or things into the Shadows and do anything he wants with them.[10] Certa can only use his Mana on things that have a shadow*, otherwise he can't do a thing. He can't do anything to spiritual things like ghosts**. Shadow Nine is more stable than Dream Nine.[11]

Mana Rate: The Absoluteness, Realization and Stability of Certa's Innate Mana are immeasurable.[12]

People with the Innate Mana Nine can perform "Annihilation". This means bringing a life or an object into one's subspace (e.g. shadow) and then completely forget about them, be it what they have done to them, when they brought them into their subspace, where they put it, what it was, their entire existence. Certa doesn't know if the life/object is going to be forgotten forever, if and how it could be retrieved and what happens if it's something alive, because he doesn't remember what he has left behind in his shadow. Annihilation is the capital punishment of Rozerokarta.[10]
Nines cannot perform Annihilation on themselves. If it was possible, it would be the only way Certa could kill himself.[13]

Another skill of Nines is "Silence". With this the Nine can bind someone in their subspace (e.g. shadow), but make that someone visualize and feel the abyss of their own subspace. Once trapped in the illusional epitome of fear, their sense of self starts to give way. The trapped person loses everything to fear, but to others, they appear peaceful as if nothing is happening. If a Nine is not feeling too well, they can also end up trapping themself within Silence. When this happens to Certa, he sees himself, because he has nothing else to fear.[13][14]

The tattoo of "6" aka The Nine Formula" is a type of magic subspace users can perform. It appears in the process of synchronizing the changes made in the subspace and the ones of reality. The tattoo is only visible when the Nine is using magic.[15]

Note:
* This might imply that Certa cannot use his Mana on Funoire, as she hasn't a shadow.
** Melly might be a "ghost", while Certa's Ghosts might actually be "shadows".

Background

Certa is the lord of the castle that imprisoned Melly. After Melly was imprisoned, Certa went to her cell and offered to bring back her powers. Once the two of them talked, they became friends and fell in love with each other. Certa vowed to protect Melly. He even told the Creator that he will be responsible for Melly's action since no Magic can be done without his permission inside the castle. But because of an unexpected twist of fate, Melly changed the time and made March 1 into February 29.

The consequence of Melly's magic was Certa's time being stopped.

Personality

He seems very distant and intimidating on the outside, but we see his soft, kinder personality when he becomes Hiasen's friend and mentor later on during the La Lune arc. Known to be secretive, especially about his past, which Ten remarks on and calls him gloomy.

Relationships

Bahn
In Bahn's opinion, Certa was not a being, they should have aspired for.[16] He found his existence quite worrying and said, if he had to choose between "a moon that does not light the way to hell and a lonely lamp" then Certa would be the moon. When Bahn was still young and didn't know Certa very well yet, he thought Certa was "valuable" and could perform the role Tessera wished of him.[2] But it took only 2 years for Bahn to realize that Certa didn't have the traits needed to ednure Annihilation in the long run.[17] With that he understood Certa better than his siblings Psychi and Thier.[18] Bahn would defend Certa's actions, and vice versa.[19][20] He would even get angry at people on Certa's behalf.[21] It saddens and pains Bahn how much Certa had to go through, regarding Melly and all the Annihilations he did, how he was treated by his siblings,[22] and that he grew into an adult who yearns for death.[17] Bahn was never able to feel joy, happiness, or hope from Certa. All he can do now is to support Certa in achieving his goal to finally find peace.[22]
Sua
Sua and Certa were dating at some point.[22] She is still protective of him, for example, she didn't tell Ten that Certa was the sponsor of the orphanage Mick grew up in, even though it was a crucial clue for Senika's case.[23] She also worries how Certa is coping with his job a an executioner. It was somewhat hinted that Certa was the one who ended the relationship, i.e. Bahn says that Sua is still not over Certa, and that she was hurt by him.[22]

Watch

Certa watch s3ep39

Certa always wears a self-mending watch since the incident with Melly.[24] He refers to it as his "if lost return to mom"-wristband.[25]

The inscription allows to move around space and time, i.e. between realms. With an error, he'd bounce off into another time and space and then be lost, not able to return to the here and now. This happened when Melly meddled with his time. Time is one of the Creator's jurisdictions and overriding it comes with a price. Certa "paid dearly with being lost in time."[25] The watch was also broken during the incident 16 years ago.[26] When he was distracted with other work, someone who meant him harm got to the watch and broke it. "To align the wheels of here and now with the time you're cast to, whoever [is] lost must stop living. [...] So [he] let the Ghosts who call [him] god cut [him] to pieces and kill [him]." Certa wasn't exactly dead, because overriding the Creator doesn't keep him dead for long, but he was robbed of his time and now always relies on the watch. Certa mentioned that the Ghosts who haunt him, were the ones who ripped him apart.[25]

The watch also serves as a key to the place he lives in. The place can be accessed through the door in the back of his office. If the door is opened without the watch, it just leads to the hallway like the door in the front. Only with the watch it is possible to see what is really inside. The holder of the watch must turn the carta point two notches anti-clockwise and then open the door, it will now have a passageway downstairs to another room. The officers of Yeohadan are unaware of that passageway, however, there are a few exceptions to this rule, namely Hiasen,[27] Hellfire,[27], Kanis,[28] Mick, Yan and later Ten.[29]

Resonance Stones

Certa wears a necklace with 5 Resonance Stones in total.[30] According to Jewby they are quite significant items and if Certa gives them to someone personally, they start to belong to that person and nobody else can use them, because they don't have permission.[31] The emblems on them react to changes in their owner and are all supposed to protect the will of the owner. The 5 emblems represent

  • a Mind full of Hope
  • an Accompanying Lamp
  • a Shield of Support
  • a Scythe of Resistance
  • a Distorted Compass.[32]

Certa gave one of them to Hiasen during the case of the 13 missing children[33] and later on the whole necklace to Ten when he was severely injured by Funoire in Season 4. The Ghosts think that Hiasen will be in Certa's dept for receiving the stone and Funoire is surprised, Certa would give the stones to a "piece of garbage" like Ten.[34]

The Resonance Stone Hiasen received holds the crest that responds to Hiasen's heart only,[35] the "mind full of hope". Out of the 5 Resonance Stones, it is the only one with the ability to materialize. It lets the En Piste know about the intentions the stone's owner unconsciously has, and it prioritizes those intentions to avoid situations they want to avoid.[32] It ensures that his will is respected. Because of the stone, Heath was not able to remove Hiasen's En Piste[35] and Ten was not able to kidnap him in Kasin's stead.[30] He didn't want to be pushed around by them.[36]

The Accompanying Lamp signifies regard for others as well as patience towards them. The Shield of Support and Scythe of Resistance signify control through power and the authority to make that possible. When explaining their meaning, Jewby wasn't certain about the Distorted Compass, but assumed that it probably has something to do with the time-space of the dead.[32]

They can also be used to scan memories (although, that's illegal).[37]

Season 1

Melly's Diary[]

The Story of Melly & The Boy is a fairytale that narrates the background story of Melly Day:

In this story Melly is locked away in solitude because her powers pose a threat to society. One day she is approached by a boy, Certa, who asks her for help.[38] He would give her back her powers, if she used them to cure his fox. She agrees. Certa is greatful for her help and visits her regularly. They fall in love with each other and want to marry once they grew up.
The relationship between the two worries the Creator*. They fear it could harm Certa. But he finds that funny because he is the one who controls the use of Mana in the place where Melly is locked and he could stop her if necessary. Furthermore, he has a hard time to agree with the Creator's thoughts and doesn't understand why they want Melly to be killed. The Creator even injured his fox. Their thoughts and actions make Certa sick.[6]
On February 28th Melly makes Certa a birthday present: she creates February 29th in a year that is not a leap year. With this, though, she goes against the "providence" and the price was Certa's time stopping on the border of February 28th and March 1st. She could not use her "imagination" to revive him because the dead can't come back. Shocked about the consequences of using her powers, she killed herself.[6]
Melly Day is a day to congratulate the birth of Certa on behalf of the dead Melly.[6]

The story of the two is a fairy tale, yet there are reports by kids who claim to have met Melly on February 29. According to rumors she's revived by the Creator. When Kasin hears of the story, he declares the Creator to be mad. They should have educated Melly instead of ordering to kill her. He says, the Creator didn't care about the two. If they did, they would have revived the boy.[39]

The reports turn out to be true: Melly appears in front of Hiasen and is looking for her boyfriend Certa.[6] She confuses Hiasen for him and realizes after her mistake that she can't remember Certa's face, but she is still determined to see Certa again because the Creator heard her prayers and told her she can meet him.[39]

Hiasen doesn't believe Melly and wants her to proove that she really is who she claims to be.[39] She lends him her diary that fulfills his wishes and Hiasen tries using it to visit his father.[40] It works, however Ran is captured by Yeohadan Officers while Hiasen is with him.[41] In an attempt to protect Hiasen and himself, Ran kills the officers.[42]
Ten and Sena are assigned to investigate the case. After interrogating the supposedly only witness and survivor, Sena plans to report the results to the Captain of Yeohadan, however Ten assumes that he won't be at work as it's his birthday.[43]

Once he finds out that Melly's story is true, Kasin thinks that Melly, or rather, her boyfriend Certa might be the person who rose from the dead and for whom Ran is looking to find a way to revive his wife.[43]

* SPOILER about something that is revealed in Season 4 and may be the result of a small plot mistake or translation error!!!
The Story of Melly & The Boy says that it was the Creator who wanted to separate Certa from Melly, and execute her. The book also says that the Creator was the one to hurt Miyu.[6] But later it is revealed that it was Thier who wanted Certa to stay away from Melly.[44] She was also the person who injured Miyu[18], and wanted Melly dead.[45]

The 73rd Box[]

Flashback to a time 210 years ago:
According to Psychi, all authorities, including the Tessera, the Creator and many others decided that the High-Risk Group Mana Possessors Ran, Senika, Nori and Kasin shall stay together in The Stagnant Space for a year. Psychi could not object or file a complaint because it would have lead to the 4 kids being sentenced to death.[46]

Kasin and Ran got into a serious fight wherin Kasin used his Innate Mana to harm someone for the first time ever. [47] Psychi didn't know how, but the Tessera somehow found out about the fight. There were authorities that were bothered by Kasin's "Air" from the very start, but nothing was done about it because Kasin had never caused problems before. The fight provoked them and some of them insisted during the Sacred Assembly that they should get rid of Kasin before another such incident occured. Others had argued that it would be a question of educating him while he was still young. Eventually, it was decided, with a 3:1 vote, that The Stagnant Space should be closed down and Kasin should be excuted. Psychi stated that he couldn't do aynthing to prevent it.[48]

The Captain came to pick up Kasin from the facility.[48] When they were about to leave, Kasin made clear to Ran that he had no intention to hurt anyone with his Innate Mana and Ran started to beg the Captain to spare Kasin, saying that if anyone deserves to be punished for the incident than it is him, not Kasin. It was the first time Nori heard about the death sentence and he joined Ran right away, telling the Captain to not kill Kasin. The Captain then asked to call forth a Sacred Assembly of Tessera to discuss the matter. There, decision was made to not execute Kasin. Furthermore, the 4 kids were given social rights and there was no need for them to remain isolated from society anymore.[49]

Present time:
Ten suspects that Hiasen is Ran's son. He lets Sena in on his plans to uncover the kid, but asks her to not tell the Captain.[50] After he confirms his suspicions,[51] Kasin makes a deal with him, according to which Ten must protect him and Hiasen from Yeohadan in exchange for information on Ran and Ten agrees.[52] Following that, Ten reports to the Captain that he has been watching Kasin and Nori for a while but couldn't see any connection to Ran. Continuing the surveillance could lead to problems because of Nori's high rank, so he suggests dropping the investigation on them. The Captain is fine with whatever Ten thinks is right for his own jurisdiction. Ten also asks to exclude Sena from the case, which the Captain also agrees to. With those things being sorted out, Ten wonders if it isn't about time that the Captain would at least reveal his name or age to him, given how firm their contract is. He says that it would make the Captain look like a gloomy person with a bad history, if he keeps so many secrets. The Captain reacts somewhat surprised but then replies, smiling: "Yeah, exactly."[53]

Genius[]

Certa saved Hiasen, after Psychi had requested from the Captain to save him, as it could not be justified that Certa was allowed to live having the same Mana, while Hiasen wasn't.[54]

Season 2

Moxnox: February 29th[]

It's Certa's birthday at the beginning of Season 2 and he took a day off as he doesn't work on his birthdays. Rumors say, it’s to visit his deceased girlfriend who died on his birthday. A Yeohadan worker found it sounded similar to Melly's story.[55] When he's back in his office he notices that someone had messed up the papers on his desk, but he doesn't know, it was Melly's ghost who appeared in Yeohadan on his birthday.[56]

The Button is Hostage[]

Certa hires Hiasen after learning that he's the boy from the Black Raincoat Case who was supposed to be executed for being a "Nine". Certa also expresses confusion about Ten's reluctance to hire Hiasen: it was as if Ten was trying to hide something, that's why Certa decides to keep Hiasen close to himself to watch him.[57] At the end of the The Button is Hostage arc he also becomes suspicious of Mr. Penguin, because he made various sloppy mistakes when dealing with the case and Ten missed to report on the progress of the investigation in a timely manner. He criticizes those things during a meeting with Ten and Ten tries to brush things off. After Ten left the office, the Captain's Secretary offers to look up information on Mr. Penguin, but he chooses to trust Ten's judgment, who introduced Mr. Penguin to Yeohadan. Yet, in his thoughts, he expresses worry that Ten would tell more lies in the future.[58]

Distorted Memory[]

At the point of the Distorted Memory arc the Captain's name and age are still unknown to the characters in the story.[59] But it is revealed that it was he, who found the disoriented Ten after the then 15 year old boy had used his Innate Mana "Rule" on himself to restore Sena's eyesight. Together with Dirata the Captain questioned Ten about his identity after bringing him to Yeohadan, but Ten was completely out of it. The Captain assumed, it was due the tattoo "TEN" on the boy's cheek. He remarked, that he had never seen such magic, and thought Ten was cursed, in a sense, but not in a malicious way.[60]

La Lune[]

In the La Lune arc it is revealed that Certa is surrounded by Ghosts only he can see and they call him their god. He hasn't visited the Mana Association for 3 years,[61] so that the medication he was taking to not see them wore off.[62] Before heading to Psychi for an appointment, Certa runs into Hiasen a few times, who is complaining about the way he's treated by his team and his inability to use his Innate Mana, "Nine".[63] On all occasions, Certa notices that the Ghosts disappear when Hiasen is around and later asks Psychi about it. Psychi recommends him to hang out with the boy.[62] The Ghosts are not pleased with that idea and call Certa mean and tell him he can't do anything without their permission, but Certa ignore them and hires Hiasen for his office to teach him Mana.[64] During those lessons Certa explains things about his "Shadow" ability and he can't use on ghosts. Hiasen tells that he knows a ghost, without specifying that it's Melly, and Certa wonders: "...one of them?".[11] Certa also explains that "Nine" can be abused for prohibited magic that challenges the Creator's authorities and Hiasen mentions that it makes him think of Melly's story. Certa goes silent.[10] On another occasion, Hiasen accidently hits Certa with his magic, cutting off one side of the Captain's bangs[65], and the Certa is later forced to cut his hair to not trouble Hiasen with all the talk this might cause among the other colleagues.[66]

The Ghosts don't like that Hiasen is around Certa and decide to kill Hiasen.[67] They push Hiasen down the stairs and remind Certa that he needs their permission to do things.[68] Hiasen's injuries are mild and the Ghosts plan another attempt. Certa threatens to become mad at them. They try to convince Certa that Hiasen needs to be killed before he learns to use Nine, but Certa doesn't understand why. They ask, if he really doesn't know why Hiasen is a Nine, just like him,[8] and point out that he, too, must be wondering if there is no link between them given their similarity. The thought depresses Certa, but he keeps meeting with Hiasen[66] until the boy starts avoiding him on his own.[69] Certa soon finds out that it's because his Secretary got jealous of Hiasen and the boy doesn't want to cause trouble. However, Certa finds her behavior despicable[70] and calls her out for overstepping her authority. He makes her listen to a conversation between Hiasen and him, to show her how she differs from the boy he "cherishes". Afterwards, he tells her that "[Hiasen's] pureness shouldn't be contaminated. By neither [her] nor [him]. Nobody." He apologizes for treating her like that, but still fires her.[71] In a following conversation he also apologizes to Hiasen for bothering and using him as a "shield" (against the Ghosts) and wants to welcome him as a friend in his office in the future, not as a worker, i.e. he transfers Hiasen back to Ten's department.[72]

Flashback to a time 16 years ago, around the time of Senika's death:
When Ten's team was sent out to West Dania to capture a prison escapee, who was on the run for 3 days, Certa was in hospital. He hadn't woken up in 3 days and his vital parameters were all shown to be zero. It was said that he overworked himself and took some medicine. Mick, the director of Ten's team, intended to bring a medicine to Dania HQ by February 4. He found it on the street and couldn't ignore it because the name of the addressee, Senika, was written in the handwriting he knew very well (Note: Certa).[73] Funoire was in Certa's hospital room the whole time while attacking and killing Ten's team to find the medicine of immortality.[74] However, she didn't succeed to get the medicine, because the Ghosts broke her spell and woke up Certa on February 4. Certa received a call by Mick right after waking up. Mick regained back control over his body, after Funoire messed around with it, and realized he had killed his whole team. He thanked Certa "for trusting a guy like [him]" and asked the Captain to not forgive him, then he shot himself.[75] Shortly before February 5, the "day of the promise", as the Ghosts said, Certa was confronted with Ten's medical state after the fight with Funoire: the 17 year old boy was on the brink of death and Certa had to make a decision. He chose to use the medicine that stops death, and was meant for Senika, on Ten and saved his life.
Certa left the scene with the words: "When you find out... will you hate me for this? The sky where you broke down... is gray."[72]

Note:
It is unclear whom he meant with "you" - it could be Ten, Senika or someone else. Aside from that, the phrasing used here resembles the story about the miracle called Beyond the Moon. And Certa might consider himself as Senika's murder for saving Ten, instead of her, based on that decision.

Season 3

Orbita[]

The prologue Orbita tells the background story of Certa's birth. He was born in "the dead's cradle" which was created by Funoire on request of the Creator. The Creator wanted a "Special Miracle" in form of a child who doesn't die even after death, who never fails and who brings order to the Gods' Realm. Funoire didn't like that request and wanted to make the Creator regret it, that's why she made it, so that Certa would shine brighter than the most precious jewel in the world, like the blue water, so that his body could not perish, nor be with someone, and so that everything he wants, or loves would be destroyed because of him. She wanted him to damn the world that created him and thus turn it into a hell.[1]

The episode also features a short encounter with Melly when Certa was 16 years old[4] and at the end a scene with Senika. During his reunion with Melly, the girl is already dead, but she wished to see him again because she missed him. Certa is not happy to see her as she is dead, and it is against the truth of this world for an immortal to meet a dead person. The dead cannot be brought back. He threatens to kill her again every time they meet and doesn't want her to come back to see him. He ends the conversation with the words: "The day we meet again, will be the day my wish [to die] comes true."[1][4]
In his encounter with Senika, he passes past her, and while everyone admires his looks, Senika only states that he looks sick.[1]

That Miracle of Synodic Month[]

In the That Miracle of Synodic Month arc Certa indirectly forces Ten to involve Hiasen in the investigation on the case of the 13 missing children. He only wonders what Hiasen will do while Ten and Mr. Penguin work on the case, implying that he would occupy Hiasen while the others are busy, which Ten doesn't like, so he makes Hiasen join the investigation.[76] Hiasen lets the Captain know that he is insecure about the case, but the Captain reassures him that Kanis had spoken well of him and that it is fine to feel overwhelmed, as long as he learns from it.[77]

As part of the information gathering process on the case, Ten visits Psychi to ask for a list of suspicious researchers, making Psychi realize that Heath is conducting another experiment to create Syniez. Psychi doesn't inform Ten about his conclusion, but he contacts Certa.[77] They meet and Psychi explains that the suspect is a former member of the Mana Association which makes the case irrelevant for Yeohadan, because the Association and Eftichia can handle it better. He also warns Certa that it would complicate his ties with Tessera if he doesn't step back from the case. Certa assumes the Eftichia Leader has something to do with it and he can't help getting the wrong idea. He accuses Psychi of hiding the real reason for taking the case,[78] yet officially transfers the investigative authority as requested and asks his officers to return to normal duty.[79] This leads to confusion and anger among the officers. One of them, Ryu, complains that the same thing happened during the case 16 years ago in which Ten's team was killed. The Mana Association and Eftichia made it clear that it is not the Captain's business and it just didn't make sense that the Captain would not attend the funeral, even if he had fallen ill.[78]

After seeing Ran's desolated state due to an argument on the case with Psychi, Ten seeks the Captain to get the case back. He calls him a "jerk" for giving up on a case with missing children. To his surprise, the Captain agrees that the transfers is unreasonable and Ten asks if the Eftichia Leader is involved. The Captain explains, putting the investigation on hold was his was to keep ties with Tessera. Due to this he can't stir up things himself and asks if Ten wants to give it a try instead. Ten goes for it and takes up the investigation again.[80]

Hiasen sees the Captain because he feels anxious and not ready yet, so the Captain discloses to him that both Psychi and Ten seem to already know the suspect and crimes, so there is no need to be afraid, Ten has his full trusts.[81] The Captain explains, he's fine with Ten holding back information from him because he has no proof that he is lying to him. They also don't insist on mutual trust and he is convinced, Ten would not want to upset him.[82]

A conversation about the case between Ran and Ten moves on the topic of Melly's story with Ten finding out that the story was actually true. He then realizes that the boy from Melly's story has the same birthday as the Captain, whose real name Ten doesn't know. He remembers asking the Captain, why he wasn't dating anyone and if dating was banned for Nines. The Captain confirmed that that's the rule, but Ten also recalls the rumor that the Captain's ex-girlfriend died which doesn't line up with Captain's reply. Ten still concludes that the Captain is not the boy from Melly's Story, as they only really have the birthday in common, nothing else.[82]

Some time later, his Secretary informs him that Ten's team is acting out of their jurisdiction by contacting the suspect to check something apart from the case, which makes Certa wonder whether they would even listen if he said no. Hiasen fills him in on the plan and considers it a good idea, so the Captain grants his permission for it, but he wants to see Hiasen out of harm's way and therefore gives him one of his "lucky charms". The Ghosts are not happy about it and say Hiasen owes Certa again.[33] The team proceeds with the mission and when explosions are reported to the Captain, he starts to question his trust in Ten, but doesn't intervene.[35]

Back from the mission, Ten reports to the Captain that Hiasen caught one of the suspects in his dream and needs his help to get her out again. The Captain asks if anyone got hurt. Ten negates while being covered in blood himself which the Captain, of course, notices.[83] Certa criticizes Ten very badly, because it looks like he wasn't even trying to reduce damage, but he is interrupted by Hiasen entering the room and calling Ten to Mr. Penguin. Certa sees in Hiasen's subspace (? See Trivia or comments) that the boy erased Hellfire's memory and his own memory of having erased Hellfire's memory, while his subspace-self still has the memory of Hellfire.[84] They go to the prison to bring back Hellfire due to safety concerns. While Hiasen is catching Hellfire from his dream, a huge Ghost approaches its "god", Certa, telling him that Funoire is waiting for him. He should return home together with Hiasen and Hellfire who also don't belong with the living and will be found by Funoire if not hidden from her. They Ghost attacks them, but Certa grabs the two and evades the blast. He wonders how he's supposed to pretend that he doesn't know anything now and asks Hiasen to leave, to deal with Hellfire. Hellfire asks him about the Ghost and if he is her god as well. Certa doesn't answer. Instead, he asks what she is and if she is Funoire, but then concludes that she is "just a discarded doll of Funoire, resembling her shadows." He seals her Innate Mana and offers her to be her lord, even if he is not the benevolent type, but she doesn't has any other option anyway.[85] On the next occasion he runs into Hiasen, Certa grabs his arm roughly and checks, if Hiasen understands the language of the dead which is not the case. It means Hiasen is alive. The Ghosts warn Certa, he'd break Hiasen's fingers if he doesn't losen his grip, Certa lets go, making Hiasen almost fall down the stairs. He tells him: "Don't die. If you do, I'll revive you and your powers even if it means splitting open your head to do it." Certa leaves and the Ghosts ensure, they don't know what the big Ghost meant, but Certa says, he understands why Hellfire came to him even though she's not allowed in this world and why they wanted him to stay away from Hiasen: "As the only Nine besides myself, that kid, Hiasen... he's the only existence that can put an end to my life of no death."[86]

Kanis files a complaint about how Ten handled the case of the missing children, seemingly holding back information. She states, if Captain is covering up for Ten, then he should at least make sure no one other than Ten got hurt and find out why there were traces of Crato. Certa is forced to suspend Ten from duty for doing what Certa asked him to do, to reduce consequences for Ten.[87]

Kasin realizes that the mysteries revolving around the cases of Melly, Senika and Ran could be connected and decides to get Hiasen out of Yeohadan before Ten or Ran find out,[24] but his plans are shattered with Hiasen's request to transfer back to the Captain's office. Hiasen discovered Mr. Penguin's true identity and wants to look up records on him that can only be accessed with a higher position and jurisdiction. The Captain accepts the transfer, even though Hiasen refuses to tell him what he is up to, because Certa has plans of his own, thinking that this was Hiasen's last chance to run from him.[88]

Denial[]

Certa can't give Hiasen access to the archives until Hiasen passes the Yeohadan entrance exam and becomes a full-fledged member. Since he is a High-Risk Group Mana Possessor the Captain must attend his Mana test. During the test, Hiasen loses control over his body and his subspace-self takes over. The Captain wants him to bring the normal Hiasen back to pass the exam, but since Hiasen doesn't know how to do that, the Captain demonstrates it by bringing Hiasen into his shadows. This psyches Hiasen out since he sees a Ghost in there, which the Captain didn't expect because it was his first time to bring a living being in his subspace. Certa gets a strong hunch who Hiasen is, as he sees Senika's image in the boy's subspace. Certa is not happy with what has shown itself in front of him and tries to talk himself out of giving in into his curiosity since Hiasen is so pure and a refuge to him.

Ryu keeps pestering and provoking Mr. Penguin in hope he'd let his guard down, but instead it is Hiasen who snaps. Mr. Penguin is able to calm him down before anything serious happens. When the Captain hears about the incident, he heads to Psychi to confirm something but he doesn't get a chance to state what exactly it is since they are interrupted by Kasin. Kasin invites the Captain to some drinks under the pretext of thanking him that he saved his life around 200 years ago and to talk about how his son, who is a Nine just like the Captain, is doing in Yeohadan. The Captain accepts. Kasin reveales to the Captain that Hiasen is the child of two Syniezes and that it makes no sense that the child would be a Nine. As a reply, the Captain explains, it would be possible if the child was influenced by a Nine at a fetal stage or if the child (Note: later corrected to "mother") was killed by a Nine. Furthermore, he lets Kasin know that he is the boy from Melly's story.

After the drink-out Certa still refuses to look further into the matter. Even when Ryu confronts him with the results of his re-investigations of the 13 missing children case, letting the Captain know that Heath's death might have been a Syniez' doing, the Captain prefers to erase Ryu's memories over dealing with the findings.

Bruise[]

Flashback to a time 16 years ago:
Shortly after Senika's death, Psychi seeks out Certa. Crying, he said Certa should have kept it a secret from him that he killed Senika. She was like a daughter to Psychi, yet he met Certa first and understands what made Certa into the adult he became and thus Senika could not be higher up Psychi's priorities than Certa, his "brother". Psychi broke down asking why Certa killed Senika.

Present time:
Hiasen focuses on improving his Mana skills with the aid of the Captain. The Captain lets Hiasen more and more into his world, openly talking to the Ghosts while Hiasen is around and giving the boy his watch which serves as a key to a pathway to the Captain's private place, where he stores a lot of books on Mana.

Hiasen hides in the Captain's office from Kasin, as they had a fall out. The Captain uses the opportunity to ask Hiasen about his family background, finding out that Hiasen grew up very secluded and that he only knows his adoptive father as his family, no other relatives. Certa realizes that Hiasen has no memories of his real parents. When Hiasen thinks it's safe, he leaves and runs into Ten. Ten uses a magic stone that should enable him to manipulate Hiasen's actions, but it fails because Hiasen is protected by the Resonance Stone he received from the Captain. Learning about the power of the Resonance Stone, Hiasen thanks the Captain for caring for him. The Ghosts, however, dislike the strengthening bond between the two and that Certa wants Hiasen to practice Annihilation, so, they make another attempt to separate them. They possess Gunwoo and make him lure Hiasen into the shooting range to shoot him. Though, one the Ghosts warns Certa and he's able to arrive on time to save Hiasen, but the Ghosts don't give up and make Hiasen shoot the Captain instead. The Captain manages to wipe Hiasen's memory of the incident but not Gunwoo's before he retreats to heal his deadly wound, leaving Gunwoo wonder what the Captain is. After his recovery, the Captain informs Gunwoo that he is surrounded by Ghosts and that they were behind the attack. He doesn't wipe his memory though, because he thinks Gunwoo's invisible umbrella's could later be of use for Hiasen (and thus himself).

Later on, Hiasen overhears a conversation between Mr. Penguin and Ten. They discuss that Kasin might have met the Captain recently, but it wouldn't make sense for him to distrust the Captain so much since he was saved by him when he was a child. Ten mentions that he told Kasin about the tattoo of "6" the two were looking for and wonders if Kasin's behavior could have anything to do with it. Hiasen counts one and one together and hurries to the Captain to ask about his birthday and name. The Captain confirms that he is Certa that Melly is looking for, however he doesn't share her feelings and says she is stalking him. Hiasen realizes that Certa was lost in time-space because of Melly, but he doesn't ask about the tattoo of "6". Hiasen later apologizes to the Captain for being inconsiderate of him regarding Melly, and Certa, being moved by Hiasen's genuine kindness, tells Hiasen one more time to get away from him, before he pushes Hiasen to open the gates to hell and become his executioner. It's the last time Certa is willing to compromise to not hurt Hiasen and pretend not to see what he doesn't want to. He says, Hiasen doesn't know him at all, that he got a wrong impression of him if he thinks Certa would be a good person and that he only keeps Hiasen by his side because of his own selfish motives. Hiasen asks if he was too rude to the Captain for him to say such hurtful things. He trusts the Captain and doesn't think he will regret that, so if the Captain wants to use him, he shall go ahead, even if it means betraying Hiasen and making him resent the Captain.

Ran's cover is blown and he is arrested. Ten tells the officers that Ran is relevant to the case 16 years ago and that he was framed. He approaches the Captain and confirms that the Captain on his side since he already knew about Mr. Penguin's real identity, as Ten assumed, yet he didn't interfere. Ten asks to be placed in charge of Ran's case. The Captain agrees under the condition that Hiasen will join Ten's team. The investigation then moves smoothly leading to the discovery of one clue after another. Knowing that the case 16 years ago is related to the tattoo of "6", Hiasen finally asks Certa about it. Certa confirms that he has one when using magic. In reply to Hiasen's follow up question, if there are any other "Nines" besides the two of them, Certa reveals to him Funoire's existence. Certa also tells Hiasen that the culprit from 16 years ago, who murdered Ten's team and Senika, is the same person as Ran Bellenepia's executioner. But Hiasen refuses to believe him and thinks, Certa is only saying it because he feels guilty for turning his eyes away although he knew who the real culprit was. Hiasen also thinks that Ran won't be executed even if they won't find any proof in time because the Captain knows some charges against Ran are false accusations.

When the Sacred Assembly of the Tessera to decide about Ran's execution is rescheduled to an earlier date and it is announced that they omit the investigation process on him, Hiasen decides to tell Ten about the Captain's tattoo of "6". Ten confronts the Captain, who admits to having performed a curse 16 years ago on January 21st. It lead to Senika's death. He was the one aware Senika would die on February 5 and also the one who sent her the medicine that stops death.

The Sacred Assembly for Tessera decides to execute Ran. Hiasen tells Certa that he will prioritize Ran's safety, even if it means to kill the Captain.
